The Many Lives of Academic Presidents: Association of Governing Boards and Universities and Colleges
Published in Paperback by Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (June, 1986)
Average review score:

Interesting, absorbing!!I am from another part of the world and I did enjoy reading of the book and found many common with the ideal leadrship design everywhere in the world. If you are really into business of higher education administrationa dnare thinking about your unievsrity, you'd better get the book and read it thoroughly. I have been just 'collecting' the books about CEOs of American universities and this book is another bright constituent of my library. I would grade the book with 10 stars as it is a must for everyone involved in this business. Dr. Clark is the person who endured the troubled times of American higher education and he experienced it himself. So, the book is not written by someone for whom this business may seem just a theoretical judgment, it is rather sharing your thoughts with a practician who occupied the seat of the president for many years at one of America's biggest universities at one of the most troubled times in the US history.

Mari Sandoz's Native Nebraska
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (November, 2000)
Average review score:

A truly impressive compendium of period photographyAccompanied by in-depth captions, Mari Sandoz's Native Nebraska: The Plains Indian Country is a truly impressive compendium of period photography showcasing her life and work. Born on the Nebraska Panhandle in 1896, Mari Sandoz grew to become an outstanding American writer until her death in 1966. Her writing was profoundly influenced by the people who called at her homestead. Her acquaintances included Bad Arm, a Sioux Indian who fought at the little bighorn and was present at Wounded Knee; "Old Cheyenne Woman", a survivor of both the Oklahoma and Fort Robinson conflicts; and the legendary William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Mari Sandoz's Native Nebraska will prove of profound interest to students of Native American studies, women's studies, and American history.

The Marriage Mart
Published in Paperback by New American Library (March, 1984)

Well-written account of the status of women in the Regency. If you are a fan of Regency novels, FIND A COPY OF THIS BOOK. It is one of the best in the genre.
This is an extremely well-written account of the role and status of women during the Regency period. Ms. Clarke skillfully weaves socio-economic and psychology lessons into a very affecting book. These are characters you grow to care about. Even the "not so nice" characters are presented in full dimension. No cookie-cutter bad guys here.
It is one of the few in the genre that I have re-read.

Mastering Advanced Spanish (Hippocrene Master)
Published in Paperback by Hippocrene Books (October, 1993)
Average review score:

A Review of Mastering Advanced SpanishI have been a student of Spanish for many years now. As a student I always look for ways to improve my language skills that is why this book captured my attention. It is a book that has been written for students of Spanish that have reached the level of basic communication and that are simply trying to expound on what they have learned. The book helps speakers of Spanish to fine tune their skills. I find that anyone that speaks a second language, that they consider not to be their native language, could use reminders now and then to help them improve. Mr. Clarke's book is just the ticket. When one sets out to learn a new language there are four areas that they must master in order to become proficient. These areas are, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, speaking and writing. This book is designed to help students improve in these areas. A tape can be purchased to help the student with their listening comprehension while other activities are created to help the student write and read. The only drawback is the speaking excercises or lack thereof. I imagine if the reader actually read out loud they could practice forming the words. This is what I do. The book has been written with the Spanish that is spoken in Spain as the main focus. Students of Latin American Spanish may note some of the lexical differences. As one who has lived in Spain I recognize and appreciate the Castillian that is used, but it may be viewed as not being universal. If the reader is interested in Spanish culture and society this book addresses some interesting facets while at the same time teaching the finer points of the spoken and written language. Overall I have found this book to be very helpful and interesting at the same time. As I follow the journeys and experiences of a couple from England on holiday in Spain I learn ways to improve my Spanish or review areas, such as grammer, I have forgotten

Medical and Genetic Aspects of Purebred Dogs
Published in Hardcover by Cortlandt Group (August, 1994)
Average review score:

Medical and Genetic Aspects of Purebred DogsExcellent book! I am a veterinarian and I often get questions regarding specific breeds and the problems they can have. This book is indexed by breed, not disease, which makes it easy to use. In addition, the problems of the breed are easy to see within the text. An excellent resource for veterinarians, breeders, and anyone who is considering purchasing a purebred dog.

Medicine for Beginners
Published in Hardcover by Writers & Readers (December, 1986)
Average review score:

Cynical, but InformativeMedicine for Beginners is a historical approach rather than an aesthetic approach. It covers from whence medicine was for the shamans and healers and witch doctors. Soon, it became a practice and then a teaching and schooling. The author, although not cynical of the medicine itself, has some animosity against the trade which has become a biollion dollar a year business. Doctors has made it difficult to become a doctor (to raise prices) and insurance (to treat the rich). Since then, medicine has been really geared for those that do have money, and everyone else to pay the rest of their lives in fees (somewhat similar to the IRS and credit corps. do). Nonetheless it was a fun and easy book to read, one should not have any trouble tackling this book within a day. Out of print, it may serve as a good reference book to anyone who is reseaching medical history, but it may be somewhat out of the way as its not at the fingertips of everyone.

Men of Albemarle
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1976)

This would make a Great Movie!I own a signed first edition of this fine tale. I found it as I cleaned out old books from my great aunt's house before it was sold. This exciting story really gives a great picture of life in the Carolina colony in the early days of European settlement. It has a great storyline, well told, a strong love interest, brave deeds of daring, serious villainy and natural disaster in an historically accurate framework. This was not the Crown Colony of Virginia, but it was a land of opportunity for people trying to build a future and leave behind a past. If you are at all interested in pre-Revolutionary coastal North Carolina, this is a "must read". It is worth looking for!
Rick's illustrations are comical and rendered with a craftsman's competence, and are full of hidden jokes and cultural references.
The Afterword by Charles Manson is to die for, if you'll excuse the pun: a wild rant that is worth the price of the book.
